Chapter 27

Zoey

I woke up in the ocean, in Kyro’s arms. The first thing I saw was the russet-haired mermaid with the sunset tail. What was her name again? I’d only seen her a couple of times and met her once. Isabella, I think it was. “What’s going on? Why am I in the water? What happened?” Kyro looked as though he had seen a ghost. He pulled me close and kissed me hard. “I’m so glad you’re back!” I looked around, confused, and saw Q leaning over the boat's railing, watching me. I wasn’t sure why my head was so foggy. And waking up in the water was highly disturbing. It must have been evident from the look on my face.

“We thought you were dying. Kyro had to get help. Isa has been here for two days working on healing you. You’ve been out for almost four days total.” Q was blunt as ever, but it was a relief. I couldn’t remember exactly what had happened, but there was a dark shadow in my memory, and it terrified me.

“You won’t remember anything right now, if at all.” It was as though Isa could read my mind.

“How did you know?”

She laughed, “The look on your face said it all. It’s OK. You’re safe now.”

Then Isa turned to Kyro and kissed him on the cheek. “Mateo, will you escort me home? I’m feeling a bit weak and could use the company.” Then she turned back to Kyro. “Let me know if you need anything else. You know I’m happy to help.” And with that, Isa and Mateo headed back under the water, leaving me to figure out what was going on.

We pulled into the dock and anchored the boat. We were in a small port in South Africa, where Kyro had some friends. Our journey had been long and quiet so far, except for the mermaid visits each evening. I met each of them and watched Kyro swim and play with them in the water. It was a nice break in the monotony of sailing on the ocean. Kyro was concerned about running out of supplies before we made it to Japan, and I think Q was getting tired of boat life as well.

We left the boat to meet up with Kyro’s friends and gather supplies. There was an open-air market set up a few yards from the docks. We strolled over to see if we could find the food and supplies that we would need. Kyro kept an eye out for his friends while we shopped. I could tell he was feeling nervous about this stop, even though it was necessary.

He asked a few of the vendors if they had seen Gill and Mack. It was a small village, and the vendors he asked knew them. They pointed us toward the village center, past the market, toward the jungle that surrounded it. We decided to venture that way and see if Kyro could find the information he was looking for.
